Addressing the press at the Ministry in Juba Dr. Samson Paul Baba, Director General for External Assistance and Coordination said maternal and child mortality rate was appalling and challenging because there are no enough qualified health attendance in most areas of the south.
OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORY: Multiple media outlets reported on 27 July on a press conference that was organized in the Gaza Strip under the theme « Unleashing the power of women and girls will accelerate progress. » UNFPA Representative Barbara Piazza Georgi opened the conference with a statement that highlighted the challenges and opportunities in a world of seven billion, in addition to explaining the campaign’s objectives and themes. The Palestinian Bureau of Statistics provided an overview of the situation of the Palestinian population in 2011, followed by a statement on the situation of Palestinian women from the Culture and Free Thought Association, a long standing partner of UNFPA. The conference was closed with an overview on the situation of the population in Gaza, provided by a national demographic expert.

Al Rai reported on 3 November and Ad Dustour reported on 1 November that a training workshop organized by the Youth Peer Education Network (Y PEERs), in cooperation with UNFPA in Jordan, took place at the United Nations University. The training aimed to expand the Y Peers network and to build the capacities of young people to design and implement training programmes to work with young people in different areas, and to come up with new youth initiatives focusing on health and healthy lifestyles issues, especially reproductive health issues. Y Peer is an innovative initiative by UNFPA to encourage young people to promote a healthy lifestyle through peer to peer approaches and to empower young people to make responsible decisions.
